Bill authors want to send a message of support to Black people, others who have faced hostility because of their hair
Puthiya Puriayili Siddiq, who hails from the south Indian state of Kerala, was hit by a car driven by a Pakistani on May 20, 2017, on the Sharjah-Dubai ring road. Siddiq was rushed to Al Qassimi hospital in Sharjah. In early 2018, the Kannur native was shifted to a hospital in Kerala for further treatment.
Siddiq has been bed-ridden since the accident as he suffered a serious spinal cord injury and dislocation of the fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae.
Salam Pappinserry, a lawyer with Ali Ibrahim Advocates and Legal Consultants, Sharjah, who represented Siddiq, said the prosecution charged the motorist with causing critical injuries while driving recklessly.
Pappinserry said: "The victim's brother, Zubair Puthiya Purayil, and his brother-in-law, Ramangalath Muhammad, approached us to file a civil compensation claim against the insurance company."
The legal office filed a civil suit before the Dubai Civil Court, seeking compensation against mental, medical and physical damages.
The lawyer told Khaleej Times that the insurance company denied any liability. However, after hearing both sides, the Dubai court ordered the insurance company to pay Dh1.09 million to the victim as motor vehicle accident compensation.
Mohammed told Khaleej Times: "We spent a lot of money for his treatment. His family is not able to handle the expenses.
