A couple allegedly tricked a Dubai-based man into paying them Dh725,000 for a GCC passport. The Dubai Public Prosecution has referred the couple to the Court of Misdemeanours.
The husband, who will stand trial in absentia as he was deported in 2002, met the complainant outside the UAE and collected the amount on different occasions after claiming to have "influential government connections". However, after he collected the money in cash and cheques, he disappeared.
The probe, which was carried out by assistant chief prosecutor Khaled Hassan Al Muttawah, concluded that the defendant had planned the fraud since 2013. "He met the complainant and offered to get a GCC country passport issued for him. He took advantage of the volatile circumstances surrounding the complainant's own country."
The defendant told the complainant to pay him Dh610,000 in cash on different occasions. The complainant issued two cheques for Dh197,000 and Dh203,000, which the wife encashed from a bank in Dubai.
