A worker, who stabbed his colleague with a kitchen knife while under the influence of drugs, has been sentenced to three years in jail and fined Dh40,000 on appeal. He was also ordered to pay Dh100,000 in damages to the victim.
Court records show that the stabbing incident happened after a heated argument between the defendant and the victim. The altercation - which took place near their home in Abu Dhabi - prompted the defendant to pull out a knife and repeatedly stab his co-worker in different parts of his body.
The victim sustained serious injuries and had to spend weeks in a hospital.
A medical report said his stab wounds left permanent damage to his body, with some organs being affected.
Investigations further revealed that the defendant was consuming hashish and tramadol.
Prosecutors charged the Asian worker with attempted murder, drug abuse, and driving under the influence of drugs. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance earlier sentenced him to five years in jail and fined him Dh40,000. He was also ordered to pay the victim for damages.
The man then challenged the ruling, saying that the attack was not intentional. He told the appellate court that he suffers from a mental illness. However, a psychiatric report showed that he didn't have such health issues.
The appellant court judge reduced the jail sentence to three years and maintained the rest of the ruling. The Asian will be deported after serving his time in prison.
