Three men have been sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay a Dh100,000 fine each for allegedly organising a gambling game in a public place. They will be deported after serving their jail term.
A police patrol spotted the men luring passersby to a gambling game on a street in Naif area around 9pm on May 1.
The trio were collecting amounts of money between Dh100 and Dh500, worth of bets, from people, which they would lose if the game did not work according to a "specific way".
"When we checked, we found out that they were cheating and all the betters had lost their money," said a policeman, 37.
He said they seized more than a Dh1,000 from the accused and the playing cards they used to con people.
"Each one of them had a specific role: one lured people, another played the cards, and the third claimed to be a winning player to encourage other men to participate," said the officer.
He said the defendant whose role was to play the cards, was hiding one up his sleeve and used it to make people lose their money.
Police found that the trio, two Pakistanis aged 25 and 48 and an Indian, 32, had entered the country on visit visas.
During police questioning, the trio admitted illegally organising a gambling game in public, but they denied the charge in Dubai criminal court. The three were convicted.
