A 33-year-old Indian warehouse keeper and two transportation workers, including a 31-year-old Indian and a 30-year-old Pakistani who are at large, were each sentenced to six months in jail and to pay a Dh150,000 fine by the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday for embezzling 900 juice boxes from a food catering company's branch at the police academy.
According to public prosecution records, the thefts took place at the branch in Al Barsha between April 2017 and May 2018 and were worth Dh23,760.
The trio was accused of abusing their posts to embezzle three delivery orders - each order was for 100 boxes.
The court also ordered each of the three defendants to pay another fine of Dh23,760.
They will all be deported upon completion of their jail sentences.
The warehouse keeper allowed the two accomplices to keep a large quantity of juice boxes when the deliveries were made instead of depositing them at the warehouse. They sold the juice later. While the keeper collected a total amount of Dh10,800 from that unlawful deal, he signed receipts and bills that the ordered merchandise was delivered and deposited at the warehouse.
The three have been convicted of embezzlement, forgery, use of forged e-documents and criminal complicity.
When interrogated by the public prosecution investigators, the main defendant confessed he agreed to his accomplices' plan of stealing 100 boxes from each delivery. He was promised Dh1,200 from each theft.
The Indian PRO of the plaintiff said they reported the incident after the auditor discovered a deficit worth Dh23,760 in their books.
The ruling has been appealed.
