Two women were sentenced to six months each in jail by a Dubai court on Tuesday for assaulting a police officer on duty.
The two Canadian expats - a 25-year-old business development manager and a 37-year-old design manager - pushed the officer who was asking them to present their IDs, the Court of First Instance heard. They also used abusive language against him.
The incident happened on July 19 last year, when the officer responded to a call made by a taxi driver.
During the investigation, the officer said he was on patrol duty with a colleague when they received a report about a problem in City Walk. "A cab driver told us that he dropped three women and a man at a building, but they just stepped off his car without paying him," he said.
The cop then went to the building. And since the group did not come down even after telling them he is a police officer, he told the security guard to take him to their flat.
The women didn't given any reason for not paying the cabbie and they also refused to present their IDs, he said.
"One of them said she would complain at her country's embassy while she kept talking inappropriately. That woman also said I can't do anything to her," he told the investigator.
When he finally got an ID of one of the women, she yelled and tried to slip her hand in his pocket to take her ID back. "I stopped her. Both women did not respect me or my uniform. They pushed me back."
He also said the women danced in a mocking way in front of him. He called the lieutenant in charge at the police station and asked him to send a policewoman to apprehend the duo.
A case was filed at Bur Dubai police station. The Dubai public prosecution accused them of physically assaulting and verbally abusing an on-duty police officer and consuming liquor without a permit. Though the duo denied the charges, the court found them guilty and ordered their deportation after their jail term.
The ruling may be appealed.
