The Ministry of Infrastructure Development has launched a Dh82 million harbour development project in Al Meydan Marina in Umm Al Quwain.
The eastern and western sides of the marina will be filled with gravel stones and sand for a distance of 700 metres from the beach to the depth as part of the first phase of project, which is expected to be completed in 16 months, said Jassim Humaid Ghanim, head of UAQ fishermen society.
The filling process will help accommodate bigger boats at the entrance of the harbour, he added. "The project includes construction of 140 new berths that include 100 for small and big boats, and 40 for big-size launches starting from 38 feet and up to 45 feet."
The second phase of the project comprises construction of a fish market, workers' accommodation, and a building for coast guards.
"The development project will help encourage Emirati nationals to continue fishing and never abandon their profession," he added.
