The Umm Al Quwain Municipality denied a video footage that went viral on social media about sulphur water being found in a well in the emirate.
"All information in the video clip is baseless and incorrect," said Ubaid Sultan Twairish, acting director-general of the UAQ Municipality. The owner of the video shall be fully held responsible for posting and sharing the video on social media.
Twairish urged the public not to post or share such baseless rumours on social media or via any means of communication.
"The UAQ Municipality authorities are set to curb rumours and protect the society against fabricated news," he added.
Meanwhile, the UAQ Municipality recently closed down seven illegal water wells.
"Hefty fines will be slapped on whoever digs a water well, violating the underground water law and the public health and environment law," he said.
Dr Heba Ayman, a chemist, said that sulphur water is a kind of running water that contains a high amount of hydrogen sulfide gas. "This gas escapes into the air when a plumbing line is opened, giving a distinct rotten egg smell."
Sulphur water is perfectly safe to drink despite its strong unpleasant odour, she added.
"Sulphur can be used to ease skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, dandruff, and warts. It also helps protect against toxins in the environment."
