UAE issues important midday break message for employers

If workers work longer than the stipulated hours, they must be compensated.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has announced today a new rule regarding the summer midday break issued last month, during which labourers, construction workers and other out-of-office workers will be prohibited from working in the sun.

The Ministry tweeted, "In addition to providing shelter and other preventive measures during the rest period, the midday break decision obliges employers to clearly display a schedule of the daily working hours, provided that it is written in Arabic and other language understood by the workers."

Labourers are prohibited to work midday in the open places and under direct sunlight in the period from June 15 till September 15 from 12.30pm till 3pm, according to MoHRE.
If workers work longer than that, they must be compensated.
According to the federal law on the regulation of labour relations, "If working conditions require a worker to be employed more than the regular working hours, the worker must be paid a wage equal to normal working hours with an increment no less than 25 per cent of the original wage.
Violators will be fined Dh5,000 per person, if labourers are found working during the break hours, reaching up to Dh50,000 if several workers were found in violation of the decree.
