Two more die, April toll in accidents rises to 6

Two men died in separate accidents in the last 24 hours in Dubai, taking the death toll in road accidents this month alone to six.

An Emirati motorist, identified as S.T. aged 24, died on Sunday afternoon after he jumped a red signal at a junction in near Emirates Bank in Al Barsha 1 and his Land Cruiser hit a signal post and flipped over when he applied the sudden brakes.

According to Salah Bu Farroucha Al Felasi, Dubai Chief Traffic Prosecutor, an eyewitness said the incident happened around 4pm. The Emirati motorist jumped the red signal in Al Barsha 1 and had to slam the brakes as he saw a Misubishi, which was driven by an Indian motorist aged 44, coming in his direction as the signal turned green in the latter’s direction.

The Emirati’s Land Cruiser hit the Indian’s car and a signboard and flipped over many times before crashing into the wall of a house. The Air Wing of the Dubai Police rushed S.T. to Rashid Hospital but he died before reaching the hospital, said Dr Colonel Mohammed Nassir Abdul Razaq, Deputy Director for police stations in the Criminal Investigation Department.

The Indian motorist was also injured and rushed to Rashid Hospital. The two vehicles were badly damaged.

Col Abdul Razaq said the police patrols cordoned off the spot and directed vehicle movement. He called on the motorists to reduce speed especially when they are approaching traffic signals and comply with the traffic laws to protect the lives of road users.

“The road users who do not comply with traffic laws should understand that their actions would have serious impact and could cause the death of innocent people,” he added.

In another incident, an Egyptian man died on the spot as a bus he was travelling in rammed a truck on Emirates Road around 11.30pm on Sunday, Al Felassi said. The 40-year-old Bangladeshi bus driver was to blame as he was inattentive and suddenly swerved the vehicle, he said. The bus crashed into the truck which overturned.

The Egyptian passenger in the bus was seriously injured and died on the spot. Another unidentified was also injured and was rushed to Rashid Hospital.

Prosecutor Ali Al Hammadi coordinated with the Bur Dubai police on the initial procedures. According to Al Felasi, six people have died in traffic accidents so far this month and urged all motorists to exercise utmost caution for the safety of all road users.
