More residents go for public transport
Passenger numbers are on the rise when it comes to public transport, with many choosing to leave the car at home in 2012.
With the UAE firmly championing green initiatives, figures released by the Statistics Section of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), highlighted the eagerness of the emirate’s residents towards securing a sustaintable future.
The public transport users went up to 367.657 million passengers in 2012, a significant rise of 21,157,000 passengers compared to 2011 figures.
The daily ridership of Dubai Metro, public buses, marine transit modes and taxis (Dubai taxi and franchise companies) hit more than one million passengers in 2012.
Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, said He said the Dubai Metro lifted 109.491 million passengers in 2012 compared to only 69 million passengers the previous year. A staggering rise of 40,491 million.
“The number of commuters using public buses in 2012 has hit 120.774 million passengers compared with 107.407 million passengers in 2011,” he said. Meaning that up to 331,000 passengers a day were seen riding public buses last year.
Al Tayer added that the number of trips made by taxis (Dubai Taxi and franchise companies) saw an increase of 6,335,237 from 2011 to 2012, with the number totaling 68,695,237 last year. This rise was coupled with the number of people using taxis in 2012 hitting 137.39 million passengers, from 124.72 million passengers in 2011.
Al Tayer said the figures highlight the success of the large government investment into the upgrade of the transport sector.
