His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took to Twitter to wish a Happy Diwali to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to all those celebrating the festival in the UAE and all over the world.

Tweeting in Hindi, he invited residents to share pictures of Diwali celebrations in the UAE with hashtag .
What is Diwali?
Diwali is a five-day festival celebrating the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. The five day celebration begins with Dhanteras, followed by Choti (little) Diwali or Naraka Chaturdasi. It is then followed by the Lakshmi pooja. The next celebration is the Govardhan Pooja or Balipratipad (Padwa), and finally Bhai Dooj.
Dhanteras, auspicious specifically for buying gold, marks the beginning of Diwali. It's a significant day when people buy items made of metal to 'do away with any negativity and bring in good luck'.

Gold is an essential part of the celebrations and is considered to be a symbol of wealth and status and buying it makes for a great investment. The festival is celebrated during autumn but specific dates are announced based on the cycle of the moon.
Celebrations in the UAE
While South Indians celebrate 'Deepavali' with murukku and legiyam, North Indians commemorate 'Diwali' with chakli and gujiya. Many shops dish out Diwali offerings in the 'home away from home' ambience.

Stores that sell special Diwali items are generally crowded ahead of the festival. The city's prominent Indian designers exhibit extravagant, beautiful Diwali outfits. People throng shops to choose from a wide, colourful range of diyas, jewellery, clothes, candles, sweets, flowers, and wall or door hangings.
For this year, Dubai will mark the festival of lights with fireworks, musical performances, bazaars and even a world record attempt!
Indian Twitterati chime in
Indian Twitter users responded to Sheikh Mohammed's request joyfully and shared photos of their Diwali preparations using the hashtag #UAEDiwali. Many users shared photos of Rangolis and other Diwali decorations they have in their houses and offices.
