An Asian man died while another sustained serious injuries after a crane loaded with tonnes of concrete collapsed on them at a construction site in Al Nahda area, Sharjah.
A top official from Sharjah Civil Defence said that the Operation Room received a tip off at 5:30pm about a collapsed crane at a building construction site.
A team of rescue units, police patrols and ambulances arrived at the site in less than five minutes.
They managed to rescue one worker who was rushed to Al Qasimi Hospital and admitted to the ICU.
Official sources said that rescue units are still working on extracting the body of the dead worker, as the large quantity of fallen concrete requires special tools and cranes for its removal.
The Civil Defence will continue to extract the body and shift to the morgue.
Police said that forensic experts are investigating the cause for the incident and the crane's failure.
Site engineers and managers from the contracting company have been brought in for questioning to determine whether the company was following proper occupational safety hazard procedures at the work site.
