Video: UAE road opens after high tide recedes

The municipality, in coordination with the police, closed the road to allow its team to take stock of the situation.

The Kalba Corniche Road has been cleared and is now open for traffic after it was temporarily closed due to high waves that flooded the stretch.

An official at Kalba University told Khaleej Times that the municipality was fully prepared to face challenges posed by the high tide and rough sea. He added that the civic body managed to control flooding of seawater onto the road in the morning by heaping up sand on the beach.
The municipality, in coordination with the police, closed the road to allow its team to take stock of the situation. The team worked hard to ensure that the impact of seawater was limited and it didn't inundate the adjoining areas. They continued their operation till the tide receded, while pumping out the seawater from the road and the roundabout for safe use by motorists.

He pointed out that high tide occurs every year, and to control it, the municipality in 2015 installed small water barricades to prevent water from reaching the road and neighbourhoods. During the last three years, the high tide has been checked due to such barricades. However, this year it seems the tide was too high to be stopped and flooded the roads, he pointed out, adding that the municipality will study more effective solutions to contain such situations.
Earlier, the Sharjah Police closed the road around 10am and advised motorists to use alternatives routes. The stretch was opened for traffic at 3.30pm. Police also urged fishermen and beach-goers to avoid hitting the waves due to the rough sea.
