Five-time champions hold their nerve to claim victory by nine runs in the final over at Chandigarh
Ali bin Shaheen Al Suwaidi, chairman of the Directorate of Public Works (DPW), said the project would help ease pressure on the current bridge that leads to the airport. "It will also solve the current traffic congestion caused by vehicles destined for residential areas, freezones and the airport," Al Suwaidi added.
Ali Salim Al Midfa, chairman of the Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA), said: "The project of developing the new entrance to the Sharjah airport comes within the framework of a comprehensive plan set by the SAA. The plan included the construction of the bridge and the development of an alternative 2.1km long road. It also includes the construction of more than 1,000 additional parking spaces that will accommodate the vehicles of passengers and airport staff."
According to Hind Al Hashimi, director of the General Services Department at the DPW, the bridge is equipped with the "latest scientific foundations of spherical pillars and noise-reducing expansion joints".
"The bridge has been fitted with 78 decorative lighting poles with a height of five metres designed in an Islamic style. It also has 103 lighting poles equipped with power-saving LED lights. Metal barriers, which have been tested internationally against accidents, have also been put up," Al Hashimi added. The project took 535 days to complete.
