The Sharjah Police have launched a massive crackdown on vehicles parked haphazardly around mosques during Taraweeh prayers. On Saturday, a large number of motorists - including worshippers who came for prayers near King Faisal Road and other mosques - were fined up to Dh500 for parking their cars in unauthorised areas and in a disorderly way, hindering traffic movement.
A top traffic police official told Khaleej Times that the department had already warned people and spread awareness about the misuse of parking lots at mosques. "They had been cautioned against parking cars in the middle of the road that blocks traffic during prayers. A warning had been sounded that misusing such parking spaces would entail a fine of Dh500 and four black points," he pointed out.
As part of the police plan and in the wake of complaints from people, the traffic patrols have stepped up inspections around mosques to issue fines to those who park their cars in the middle of the road  and those who exploit free parking lots earmarked only for worshippers during the prayers.
Major Ahmed Sabousi of the community police said their role in the holy month is to check all negative behaviours such as the use of fireworks in the neighbourhoods, movement of hawkers, mobile vendors, and beggars. The community police have been deployed since the first day of Ramadan and will continue their presence until the end of the month to establish direct communication with various segments of the society.
