Bus passengers on city and intercity routes from Sharjah need to shell out Dh1 to Dh3 more, depending on the trip, Khaleej Times has learnt. Sources at the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) said the new tariff took effect from December 1.
As per an official circular, the ticket fare has been increased on all city and intercity bus routes.
"Bus commuters in Sharjah now need to pay Dh8 instead of Dh7 on city routes," a source said. "Those who have Sayer cards will pay Dh6 instead of Dh5.5."
Passengers on intercity bus routes will have to pay even more. "Those heading from Sharjah to Abu Dhabi or Al Ain will have to pay Dh33 instead of Dh30."
Those going to Ras Al Khaimah will have to pay Dh27 instead of Dh25.
The bus fare from Sharjah to Ajman has been increased from Dh5 to Dh6, while a trip to Umm Al Quwain will cost Dh17 instead of Dh15.
The fare to Al Rashidiya now costs Dh12 instead of Dh10, while a trip to the Dubai International Airport, Al Qouz industrial area, Mall of the Emirates or Jebel Ali costs Dh17 instead of Dh15.
The news about the bus fare hike comes days after Sharjah's taxi fare was increased by Dh2.
Residents have expressed unhappiness over the "unexpected and sudden" tariff rise.
Munzir Melki, a Syrian resident, said he stopped going to work by taxi after the latest hike and became a bus commuter. "Now, I need to pay more for a bus ride. Hopefully, the bodies concerned will revise this decision as it will affect a large number of regular customers."
Hassan Guda, an Egyptian resident, said the hike was "too high". "It would have been more acceptable if they increased the fare by 50 fils or so, not Dh2 and Dh3."
