As many as 299 bottles of cosmetics found unsafe and flouting health specifications were confiscated by Al Dhaid Municipality recently. The erring companies were fined for not complying with the norms.
The Sharjah Municipality also launched an intensified inspection targeting outlets selling fake and sub-standard cosmetic and skin care products.
The crackdowns were initiated by the municipalities following complaints from the public.
A top official at the Sharjah Municipality said the health department is carrying out inspections to monitor the market and ensure public health. The municipality would not tolerate those who cause health hazard to gain easy profits, he pointed out.
Musabah Al Tunaiji, director of Al Dhaid Municipality, said the inspectors of the health department zeroed in on outlets that sell cosmetics and skincare products to check on any violation. The inspectors visited 123 sites dealing with cosmetics and skin care and seized 299 bottles of cosmetics, he revealed.
The inspection campaigns will continue to control the markets and make sure there are no harmful products in circulation.
He urged the public to check the product while purchasing it and see that it meets all the health requirements. They should focus on the information written on the product pack, its expiration date and so on, the director said, adding that it should be tightly sealed and properly stored so it doesn't give out a bad smell.
He stressed the municipality's keenness to organise awareness campaigns on a regular basis, to introduce the latest preservation methods and foolproof storage of cosmetics.
Both the officials appealed to the public to report any expired products in cosmetic shops or beauty centers by calling 993. "When a complaint is received, it is immediately referred to inspectors concerned of various sections of the municipality to initiate an investigation into the matter," they said.
