Two Asians - in their thirties - are fighting for their lives after sustaining injuries in a gas cylinder explosion in a cafeteria's kitchen where they worked in Al Dhaid area. The blast also caused severe damages to the cafeteria and the neighbouring buildings.
Police received a call at 9am from the panicky neighbours, who heard the loud noise of the explosion. Police patrols, civil defence personnel, and an ambulance rushed to the site, where they found the workers unconscious amid the debris of the kitchen wall.
The injured workers were taken to Al Dhaid Hospital for urgent medical attention.
An official source at Al Dhaid Hospital said that the two workers were brought to the emergency department by national ambulances. He pointed out that it was clear from the medical examination that they had sustained severe burns in about 80 per cent of their bodies.
The injured have been admitted in the ICU and are under medical observation.
Fire experts from the Sharjah Police (forensic laboratory) have launched an intensified investigation to ascertain the cause of the blast.
The case has been referred to Al Dhaid police station for further probe and follow-up.
A top official of Sharjah Police has called on members of the society to ensure the safety of the gas extensions in the houses, cafeterias and restaurants and secure them after the completion of work. He asked the people to ensure that there is adequate ventilation allowing the passage of gas through the air.
