Man poses as CID officer, robs expat in UAE

Ras Al Khaimah - Denying all the charges filed against him, the defendant told an entirely different story.

A senior resident, who allegedly posed as a CID officer and robbed a man of Dh1,700, is facing trial at the Ras Al Khaimah misdemeanour court.
The complainant, an Asian man, told the court that the bogus cop asked him to get into his car and surrender his wallet, from which the accused stole Dh1,700.
When the RAK Police started an investigation, they tracked down the vehicle and found that the senior Arab was also driving a car with a stolen number plate, court records showed.
Denying all the charges filed against him, the defendant told an entirely different story. He said he knew the complainant and that the restaurant worker willingly got into his car and gave him the money.
He said that he lent Dh3,000 to another Asian resident and the complainant pledged to pay on his behalf.
"The plaintiff should be held responsible for making payment of my due money, but he refused and did not even promise to do so," the accused said.
The victim kept stalling for time, he said, until one day, the defendant saw him in front of an eatery. He said the complainant paid him Dh1,700 and promised to pay the rest later.
The defendant also said he did not steal any number plate.  "I bought the car from a showroom in Ras Al Khaimah and found the number plate in the car boot."
Without a job and enough money for registration, he said he could not help but drive the car with the number plate he found in its boot.
The court ordered the case adjourned to a later session.
