The Ministry of Infrastructure Development has started building a number of internal roads in the Buteen Al Samar residential area in Ras Al Khaimah.
The project, worth Dh26 million, is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2018, according to Ahmed Al Hammadi, manager of roads department at the ministry.
The new single-lane roads shall be all lit by solar power, he added."This will help reduce carbon emissions and negative impact on the environment, leave alone the lower maintenance costs."
The project, which also includes a number of intersections and traffic lights, will be carried out in line with the latest standards and specifications."
Al Hammadi said the ministry projects are all implemented in view of the latest sustainability and green buildings standards. "These are also in line with the UAE 2021 vision."
The ministry will carry out a number of projects across the country for various departments in the coming five years.
"These include a number of buildings for police headquarters, courts, federal roads, health centres and smart schools."The ministry has carried out four major projects worth Dh180 million in the first quarter of this year.
"These included the construction of the immigration department building in Sharjah, a dentistry centre in Khor Fakkan and health centres in Kalba and Ras Al Khaimah."
The ministry has also finished the second phase of the Emirates Road in Ras Al Khaimah's Suhail and Shamal areas against Dh69 million. "The road will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017."
Three lanes have been built in each direction of the road with a median that can be turned into a fourth lane in the future, he elaborated.
"A free intersection has also been built on the RAK International Airport Road in the Suhaila area, while all the power, water, and communication lines were moved in a secure way."
Seven truck rest areas will be built on the key road to avoid any haphazard parking or traffic congestion on the road, he underscored. "Each rest area will be able to accommodate 300 trucks."
