The Emirates Road, previously known as the Bypass Road, will be completed along the emirate by the fourth quarter of next year, according to a top official.
An official source with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MoID) said the second phase of the project worth Dh69 million will be an added value to road users, particularly those staying at Suhaila and Shamal areas.
"The promising scheme is part of the two-way RAK Ring Road work which include the building of three lanes in each direction with the possibility to add a fourth lane in the future."
A middle road island is being built as well to divide both directions, particularly at the Suhaila and Shamal areas, he added. "A free intersection is under construction as well on the RAK International Airport road opposite Suhaila area."
The new intersection will ease traffic congestion and boost flow on both directions, he added.
"All the water, electricity, and telecommunications lines have been moved and secured in both areas."
The road will be entirely ready within the last quarter of 2017 after finishing the compensation issues along the road from Suhaila to Shamal, he said. "The responsibility of that part has been moved from the RAK municipality to the ministry."
The Emirates Road is one of the most important roads in the country. "It saves time, effort and money, and reduces the pressure on the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road and the old Ittihad road starting from RAK and passing by most of the other emirates."
The key road will also be a great help to the new residential projects being carried out in RAK along the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed road.
"The development works of the road are in line with the ongoing roads and bridges projects being accomplished in RAK under the supervision of the MoID."
The ministry is currently building a new bridge that links the ring road with the Shamal area, he added. "The new bridge will be the highest and longest in RAK."
The same source said that the trucks, which are to be banned from running on the Shaikha Mohammed bin Zayed Road effective from January next year, will add more value to the Emirates Road.
"To make a success of the truck ban, the Emirates Road has been widened and equipped with Hadinat or spacious parking lots and rest areas suitable for 100 trucks at a time."
So far three Hadinat are under construction, and will be ready with the enforcement of the new rules, particularly that one on the exit of Umm Al Quwain, Al Mahmoud said.
"The other two major rest areas include one after Intersection No (7) in the way from Sharjah to Ras Al Khaimah, and on the other direction for those heading from Ras Al Khaimah to Sharjah and other emirates," the official source added.
