An unidentified motorist has racked up Dh1,250,000 in traffic fines in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.
Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of the RAK Police, said these traffic fines are the biggest ever recorded on a single driver in the emirate so far.
"The fines have all been recorded by the radars installed on the roads and highways of Ras Al Khaimah."
"Most fines came from speeding violations committed by the motorist," he added.
"Even though these were the biggest ever traffic fines recorded on one driver, he had only to pay half the amount - Dh625,000 - after the RAK Police gave him a 50 per cent discount."
The big discount was given by RAK Police due to the country's celebration of the Happiness Day, he pointed out. "The fine reduction was a great relief for the young erring driver who paid the penalty."
Official records show that the second biggest traffic fines recorded by one driver in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah was Dh250,000. "However, the driver was asked to pay the fine in full this time with no discount at all."
Mohammed Salem, a safety engineer, told Khaleej Times that such reckless drivers should be banned from driving on the roads of the country altogether.
"They are irresponsible and pose a grave risk not only to themselves but also to all road users."
Roua Abd Elalim, a pharmacist, hoped that the erring driver would not get involved in such serious violations again. ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
