The Ras Al Khaimah Police booked 519 motorists last year for parking in spots reserved for people of determination. A top officer said the offence is punishable with a fine of Dh1,000 and six black points.

Brigadier Dr Mohammed Saeed Al Humaidi, director general of the central operations department, said the same penalties apply to those found blocking access to emergency vehicles.

"Abusing these dedicated parking spaces is not only an uncivilised practice but also adds to the suffering of this important segment of society," said Brig-Gen Al Humaidi.

Abdullah S., an Emirati man with special needs, said they are in a "battle" with the illegal use of their parking spaces. "Some drivers use our parking spots that are reserved near the entrances of facilities."

He said those with determination actually require more parking spaces.
