Police authorities in Sharjah and Ajman are intensifying efforts to combat drug crimes, to raise awareness on the ill effects of drug abuse.
The move is part of activities to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, marked every year on June 26. The international anti-narcotic day is being celebrated in the country under the theme 'Be with your children - they will be good'.
Top officials at the anti-narcotic departments of the Sharjah and Ajman Police authorities stressed that the international anti-drugs day aimed to raise awareness in society about the dangers posed by drugs.
It also seeks to educate people on the methods used by drug gangs to breach the UAE's borders and target young people and students. This includes giving them pills in attractive colours and shapes and other deceitful, cunn-ing methods to lure them into falling victim to addiction.
The anti-drugs day also aims to highlight the role played by the Ministry of Interior and other agencies in the war against drugs, in cooperation with local, regional and international drug control bodies.
"All police departments in various parts of the county in general and the Sharjah General Command of Police, in particular, have intensified their efforts in combating this scourge, which threatens our society and destroys families and generations," a police official said.
The Sharjah Police, in cooperation with the anti-narcotic departments in all emirates, has seized large quantities of drugs and apprehended abusers, traffickers, peddlers inside the country.

Drug cases in Sharjah go down

Sharjah is thus seeing a relatively calmer drug trafficking scene, thanks to the police's efforts to reduce smuggling and peddling in the country.
The authorities are also on top of the drug peddlers' new and innovative methods, which attract the attention of young people and prospective addicts. "Any time they invent new ways to use drugs, the police get to know about it and busts the users," the police official said.
"The police are also making efforts to rehabilitate drugs addicts and users and help them start a new, drug-free life. The addicts who surrender themselves will not face any legal action," he said.

Ajman Police educate people on early detection

Members of the Ajman Police's anti-narcotics department, as part of its observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, distributed awareness leaflets and publications to the public and drivers in various parts of the emirate.
These listed out the early detection of addiction among children, how to combat it and tackle its spread. Awareness posters were also posted on police patrols and taxis in cooperation with the Ajman Public Transport Agency. The department also organised an awareness exhibition in the China market, distributing gifts to the public.
'Siraj' is a new and innovative awareness method installed at Ajman City Center and the Chinese market to deliver detailed information, counseling and guidance messages on drug prevention and response.
