Work begins on Dubai Metro project
DUBAI — Work has commenced on the ambitious Dubai Metro project expected to be a major commuter corridor. With 70 kilometres of lines, the Dubai Metro will have 42 stations, including nine underground stations.
A total of 87 trains with a passenger capacity of 600 commuters each will operate across the emirate of Dubai at intervals of 225 seconds, reduced to 90 seconds during rush hours.
Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced the commencement of work on the mass transit project at a ceremony held at the Mina Al Salam yesterday. The event was attended by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and other senior government delegates.
Speaking at the event, Matter Al Tayer, Chairman of Board of Directors and Executive Director of Roads and Transport Authority, said: "The RTA is committed to further Dubai Government’s vision of providing the best infrastructure and services to the people, by ensuring that a world class road and public transport network is in place. RTA’s goal is to provide a safe and secure transport system for all."
Traffic volume is estimated at 27,000 passengers per hour for each line and in both directions once the Metro is functional. This volume will represent 12 per cent of the total expected trips in Dubai for 2020.
Advanced technology and safety features are a project mainstay. The trains will be completely electronic, which will aid in punctuality and logistical control, thereby accomplishing high traffic absorption rates. The stations themselves will boast state-of-the-art architecture and have been provided with amenities that ensure commuter security and comfort. Each station will have its own car park, taxi stand and bus stop for rapid change-over.
The first phase of the project is worth Dh15.5 billion and is expected to be completed by 2009. Phase Two will be functional by 2010. RTA is liaisoning with internationally renowned contractors for key project deliverables.
The Dubai Metro project is a key facet of the integrated transport system that the RTA is striving towards to better cater to the needs of a growing city. RTA is undertaking a number of feasibility and project expansion studies to further expand the Metro in the future and offer increased connectivity.
"The Dubai Metro project is only one part of a complete and integrated transportation solution that the Authority is aiming to develop to cater to Dubai's infrastructural requirements The complete solution will include new train and bus stations, renovations and additions to the roads network, water transport systems and advanced commuting systems all aimed at providing safe and advanced means of transport that will further Dubai's economic prosperity," Mattar Al Tayer concluded.
