RCS strategic stock set up in Jebel Ali
ABU DHABI - The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has set up a humanitarian aid depot at Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafz) to build a strategic stock of relief supplies for emergencies.
"The depot is meant to provide relief supplies of international standard," RCS Chairman Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi said.
He added that the depot would provide humanitarian organisations in the country and abroad with relief goods. It will operate in coordination with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, particularly in the fields of export, import, training and clearance.
"The coordination with the Red Crescent federation will take place in such a manner that it will not be in conflict with laws and accords signed with the UAE," Mr Al Suweidi said.
Meanwhile, the Palestinian Medical Relief (PMR) received in Ramallah yesterday five ambulances from the UAE Red Crescent Society.
PMR Chairman Dr Mustapha Al Barghouti received the vehicles from RCS representative Sami Makkawi.
Dr Barghouti thanked the UAE and its leadership, headed by the President, His Highness Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for their constant support to the Palestinians.
He also thanked Shaikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who is also the chairman of the UAE RCS, for his continuous support to the Palestinian people.
He said that the five ambulance vehicles would enhance the work of the PMR, adding that the ambulances would be distributed to various Palestinian provinces.
Mr Makkawi said that the PMR enjoyed respect and confidence of international institutions and organisations, including the UAE RCS.
This, he said, was because of its various programmes in the field of medical services and other areas.
He said that the UAE had supported 175 projects in Palestine so far, including the Al Maqasid Hospital in Jerusalem, the Shaikh Zayed Hospital in Ramallah and the Shaikha Salama Hospital in Nablus, adding that each of the hospitals had received a monetary assistance of US$300,000.
