"We made the mistake of leaving our daughter alone," said the father of six-year-old N.H. who died after falling from the 15th floor of a building in Sharjah's Al Tawun area on Sunday morning.
The Pakistani girl was reportedly peeking out of the window trying to look for her mother when she toppled over and died instantly.
According to the father, N.H. had caught a viral fever for the past two days. "We did not send her to school that day," he said while speaking to Khaleej Times.
"Our youngest child cries a lot when he is dropped off to the bus, so to reasure him, I accompanied my wife early morning and both of us took the boy to the bus. N.H. was asleep," said the grieved man.
"But when we came back, we could not find her anywhere. I then understood that something wrong had happened to her," he added.
The family is from Karachi and had moved to the UAE five years ago. The couple have two other children.
Police said that the girl had landed in the balcony of an apartment on the first floor of the building and died on the spot. According to the police preliminary investigation, the little girl was peeking out of the window to look at her mother, who had gone down to drop her son to the school bus.
The police rushed the girl to Al Qasimi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The body is yet to be handed over to the parents.
