Emiratis will not be given any additional support to offset the expected changes in the cost of living due to the deregulation of fuel prices in the UAE from August 1.
The Ministry of Energy has put an end to speculations that the increase in fuel prices may see 'additional services' being offered to Emiratis. Clarifying the government's stance on what to expect following the announcement of the new prices, the ministry said in the 'frequently asked questions (FAQs)' section on its website that Emiratis will not receive any special services, including financial assistance or fuel cards.
To a question on whether Emiratis will be given financial assistance to offset the increase in their cost of living, the ministry answered, "The decision does not include such a thing."
The decision also does not include provisions of fuel cards that offer special discounts to Emiratis, the ministry stressed.
The ministry suggested car pooling as a way to rationalise fuel consumption. "The same transportation means can be shared by many individuals heading to the same place," the ministry said in response to concerns of lack of public transportation in emirates other than Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi.
On Sunday, Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Al Mazroui, Minister of Energy, tweeted: "The decision will positively impact the behaviour of individuals who will start choosing the fuel-efficient automotives."
Meanwhile, reports from Oman said fuel stations in areas such as Buraimi and Madha, which share a border with the UAE, are likely to face a rush of vehicles from the UAE once the new prices are announced.
