As many as 158 counterfeit products - with fake trademarks of international brands - were seized from markets during a recent inspection carried out by Fujairah Municipality's consumer protection department. Five outlets were issued fines for importing such fake products, including bags, watches and clothes, using unauthorised methods.
An official at the department said that the crackdown on counterfeits was part of the municipality's intensified campaign to monitor the markets and prevent consumers from dangerous products which could pose a health hazard.
The municipality - which plans to carry out the year-long drive with zero-tolerance towards the offenders - is keen to enforce rights under the Trademarks Law and the Law on Prevention of Fraud and Deception in Commercial Dealings.
The official said the municipality will continue its inspection targeting fake products that endanger public health and affect the economy. The authorities would seize counterfeit goods and destroy them, while referring the erring shop owners to the prosecution.
He said that the municipality is also working on intensifying awareness among the public to educate them about the dangers of fake products and how to identify them.
The municipality urged consumers to cooperate in the campaign and lodge complaints or make enquiries by calling 80036.
