The UAE rolled out a massive relief campaign on Saturday for flood victims in the Indian state of Kerala as local officials pleaded for more help.
Relentless floods battered Kerala, where more than 190 have died in a little over a week and much of the state is partially submerged.
More than 300,000 people have taken shelter in over 1,500 state-run relief camps, officials said. But authorities said they were being inundated with calls for assistance.
The UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has instructed the formation of a national emergency committee to provide relief to Kerala.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan thanked UAE leaders, including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai; and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for tweeting out their solidarity with Keralites.
