Two children drowned in a swimming pool of a villa in Dubai's Mirdif area on Saturday evening. The deceased girl was one-and-a-half-year-old, while her cousin brother was aged two-and-a-half years.

Ahmed Essa Al Hamadi, their uncle, said his sister, who lives in Mirdif, had invited her family members over for Iftar. Hamadi -- who couldn't make it to the party -- said the two children had Iftar with the other family members and they somehow sneaked out of the kitchen door to the yard. "The family members thought they were playing with the other children. But after a while, they noticed that the two were not with them," Hamadi added.

The entire family started looking for the missing kids and spotted them in the swimming pool. Both were unconscious. The police rescue team provided first aid to the two and tried to revive them. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The police ambulance rushed the boy to Latifa Hospital for medical treatment, but couldn't save him.

Hamadi said he was not there at the site when the accident took place. His brother called him and told him about the tragedy which had left the family in a state of shock.

He said that the girl -- Soad -- was the only child of her mother, while the boy -- Shihab -- has three brothers and a sister.

The family is mourning the deaths. Their photos have been posted on Instagram by some family members, sparking an outpouring of grief.
