Sudden swerving and speeding were the main causes of accidents on Dubai roads.
Sudden swerving caused 426 accidents which resulted in 12 deaths and 393 injuries in the last nine months this year, while speeding led to 25 accidents that claimed 6 lives and left 28 people injured in the same period, according to statistics of the Dubai Police.
Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of general department, said that many drivers were taking abrupt turns and not abiding by the speed limits, which are the two very common reasons behind most accidents.
He added apart from these, other causes of fatal accidents include tailgating and lack of attention given to road users.
Al Mazrouei said speeding incidents were the major reason for reducing speed limit on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road. The trucks and light vehicles as well as a large number of drivers exceeded the speed limit which used to pose risk to the road users.
He pointed out that there are many other unacceptable behaviours of drivers that lead to fatal accidents, such as driving in reverse. Driving in reverse caused 20 accidents, killing four people and injuring 11 others in the last nine months of this year.
Al Mazrouei said that the traffic police experts analyse the causes of traffic accidents and on the basis of the results, immediate measures are taken to reduce them.
He said that the negligence of some drivers in carrying out maintenance of their vehicles leads to a serious fallout. Eight people were killed and 35 others injured in five accidents when the tyre of their vehicle burst during the last nine months of 2017, Al Mazrouei underlined.
He stressed on the need to check one's car periodically, especially tyres. Tyres and all car accessories should be bought from authorized sellers, he pointed out.
