The Maliha-Khor Fakkan road project, worth Dh150 million, will be completed in the second quarter of 2019.
The road will link the Sheikh Khalifa and E99 roads with the first phases of the Khor Fakkan western road, according to a senior official.
Ahmad Al Hammadi, director of the roads department in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, said up to 19 per cent of the road has been completed so far. "The road will better connect the cities of the eastern coast and give shorter access to the other roads of the country."
The 5.5km road poses a big infrastructure challenge, he added. "The four-lane road, two in each direction, passes through tough mountains and includes a 360-metre tunnel. The road will cut the trip time by more than 40 per cent."
The road will connect the Dibba-Khor Fakkan-Kalba E99 road with the Sheikh Khalifa Road E84, along with the central region through the Sharjah-Maliha E102 road, Al Hammadi explained.
"When completed, the project will ease the traffic movement of light vehicles and trucks, and reduce costs and trip time."
