The Consulate General of India in Dubai on Tuesday warned residents of a fraud where some unidentified men are making calls to the public in Dubai and northern emirates and asking them to deposit money in bank accounts.

The men claim to be calling on behalf of the consulate, and tell the call receiver that they have infringed some immigration law in the UAE, for which they need to deposit money in a bank account.

The consulate says it doesn't make such phone calls, and has asked the public to report such calls to the consulate via email.

"If anyone receives such calls, he/she may please inform the consulate by dropping an email at hoc.dubai@mea.gov.in and cgoffice.dubai@mea.gov.in," a consulate statement said.

The consulate is also in touch with local authorities in Dubai regarding this matter, the statement added.
