Bargain hunters at this year's edition of Gitex Shopper are all pleased with the range of deals offered by retailers across various products.
Many who arrived at the long-awaited event over the weekend noted that they had waited on many of their electronics purchases because they were sure of a deal that would go easy on their wallets.
Friday witnessed a huge crowd of customers thronging the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) in long queues for the shopping extravaganza that will conclude today.
"I wanted to buy the new Samsung Note 9 almost as soon as it was launched, but my wife told me to wait for this exhibition," said Anthony P. Gerard, a Sharjah resident. "There are lots of deals here and I am happy that I waited. A lot of my friends also waited because they wanted to get a good package deal."
Abdul Hamid, another resident from Sharjah, also said that he was at the exhibition to scope out the best deals on laptops. Hamid wanted to buy a laptop for his son, who will soon be starting university. "He is very excited about having his own laptop since he usually does all his work on our home computer. We have been looking at some brands to see which one is the best, and comes with all the features that will help him with his studies."
Hamid also said that in addition to buying a powerful laptop, it was important for him to get something that was light and easy to carry. "I don't want him to carry something very heavy with him to his classes; it should be something that is light and fast to use."
Many shoppers hailed the new parking that had opened across the venue and the offer that they would get free parking if they ended up spending more than Dh300 on their purchases.
"That is the best thing," said Tricia Perera, a Dubai resident who had come to the exhibition with her family. "The fact that you can get free parking really allows you to look around and shop in peace."
Perera said that she had a long list of electronics she wanted to buy. On the top of the list was a new smartphone for her son. "We looked at everything and finally decided on a Samsung ? it was his first choice, so he is happy. I also bought a hair straightener for my sister in Sri Lanka and a new hair dryer. We are happy that we got everything we came for, and at such good prices. It is worth waiting for Gitex if you want to buy electronics."
Asked if there was anything else that had caught her eye at the exhibition, she replied: "There are lots of good deals on TVs. My husband is a huge cricket fan and we were just talking about how we might upgrade our old TV; but not this year, we will probably do it next year since we will be travelling home for the December break."
