The Dubai Police arrested a fugitive Asian businessman after setting up an ambush at Dubai International Airport. The man was wanted for issuing dud cheques worth Dh624 million.
Brigadier Ahmed Bin Ghalaita, director of the Raffa police station, said that Raffa's special operation team, "Eagle", caught the businessman who had been in hiding for more than a month. The cheques were issued for petroleum products bought from three large petroleum companies in Dubai which he had shipped to his home country. Bin Ghalaita added that the businessman owns a petroleum company in the UAE as well as his country of origin.
The businessman had travelled during the New Year holiday and neglected to leave sufficient funds in his bank account to clear the cheques. When the victims contacted him, he ignored their calls then later informed them that he would neither pay the money nor return to the UAE.
The victims filed a complaint with Dubai Police who proceeded to take action and tracked the businessman down. Bin Ghalaita stated that the Eagle team contacted the businessman who then denied having issued the cheques. Six members of team Eagle proceeded with an operation to lure the man back to the UAE by setting up a lucrative business opportunity. After monitoring his movements they realized that he would conduct his business by travelling to the UAE and leaving on the same day after obtaining the products.
The team also discovered that he had cultivated trust with these companies and had paid them on time up to Dh1 billion, but this time he was late in his payments and had opted to remain out of the country for a long time.
The businessman was immediately arrested once he alighted upon UAE soil and was handed over to the authorities. He confessed to the charges and was referred to the Public Prosecution.
According to Bin Ghalaita, team Eagle comprises of eight individuals specialised in tracking down fugitives from the law, especially those for financial and criminal cases. Most cases concern cheques issued in bad faith and neglecting to make payments. As Raffa area is a financial hub, the police station decided to recruit the team to follow up on such cases.
