Two Chinese men have been charged with breaking into a villa and robbing Dh1.2 million worth of jewellery. The Court of First Instance is hearing their case.
Prosecutors have accused the pair - aged 32 and 22 - of targeting the villa owned by an Emirati woman on the night of September 14, last year, after carrying out a recce for some time.
The duo seized the opportunity when the villa's residents were away and used sharp tools to break locks and gain access inside the private property. They got away with jewellery worth more than Dh1.2 million.
The two men, who are related, faced charges of forcible robbery with the use of sharp tools, trespass and damage of private property.
The 22-year-old accused is still at large and has been charged in absentia.
The Emirati complainant, 31, said that her sister discovered the villa had been burgled after 5pm one day in September, last year.
"She was with the driver and two domestic helpers when they entered the villa and found the place in total disarray. Doors and locks had been broken. When they went to the upper floor, they found the safe had been broken and diamond as well as gold jewellery worth more than Dh1.2 million had been stolen. The damage done to the villa is estimated at Dh 30,000."
A police lieutenant said they set up a task force to investigate into the robbery after the complaint was received. "We nabbed the first accused on September 25, 2017. He admitted he and his relative planned to target villas across Dubai and to execute their schemes, they purchased sharp tools and rented a car. They spotted the complainant's villa in Umm Suqeim, which had its lights off and found its residents were away."
The police lieutenant told the prosecutor that one of them fled the UAE few hours after the robbery, bound for China where his plan was to sell the jewellery.
