Launched in 1977, the iconic Indian Mughlai cuisine restaurant Sind Punjab is celebrating its 42nd anniversary this month. Hosting nearly 400 diners every day, Sind Punjab is one of Dubai's most popular Indian cuisine restaurants in Dubai.
Touted to be one of the best spots in Dubai to enjoy butter chicken, chicken tikka, and savoury snacks, including paani puri and sev puri, Sind Punjab is popular among residents and tourists from across the world. Guruwinder Singh, endearingly called Pappi Singh, the managing partner of the restaurant, told Khaleej Times his uncle Harban Singh launched the restaurant in 1977, two years after he opened a meat shop in Bur Dubai.
"He came to Dubai in 1975 to open a meat shop. Shortly after, he opened Sind Punjab. Back then, there were no Indian restaurants in Dubai. We were the first to start one," said Singh. Originally from Mumbai, Singh said his uncle successfully ran the restaurant with other members of their family.
Harban Singh passed away in 1991, and now Guruwinder Singh and other members of the Singh family run the restaurant. "When we launched, there were many construction workers who would eat at the restaurant. The World Trade Centre was being constructed then. Today, people of all nationalities enjoy the food at our restaurant," said Singh.
The restaurant first started in Bur Dubai, and in 1985, it opened another outlet in Karama and later in Dubai Internet City (DIC). An excited Singh said they have been loyal subscribers of Khaleej Times since the restaurant's launch. "We still keep Khaleej Times at the restaurant," he said.
