The Dubai Civil Defence has launched a safety campaign that will see mosque-goers get trained on fire safety. The aim of the campaign is to teach worshippers about the right way to use a fire extinguisher "so that they can, in turn, pass on the practical knowledge to their family members".
The campaign kicked off with a fire drill session at the Salamah bint Ali Al Zarooni Mosque in Dubai. In a video posted by the civil defence on social media, an officer can be seen explaining the basics of fire safety to worshippers inside the mosque. The video then cuts to an open ground, where the instructor explains to the people gathered there about how to use a fire extinguisher. A fire is lit in a BBQ stand and the instructor uses the extinguisher to put it out. The mosque's imam then uses the extinguisher successfully, to applause and cheers from the worshippers and civil defence staff.
The practical training continued with the worshipers, who are seen putting out the fire with the extinguishers based on instructions from the firefighters.
Colonel Ali Hassan Al Mutawa, acting director-general of the Dubai Civil Defence, said the campaign aims at raising public awareness about the dangers of fire and its causes.
Another practical demonstration will be held at Al Rashidiya mosque during the first week of Ramadan.
