Dubai hotels will soon have a carbon emission report card that they can use to measure their sustainability performance.
Dubai's Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (Dubai Tourism) on Tuesday (June 25) announced that it would provide hotels with an individual 'hotel emission analysis report', which will offer them an overview of their carbon emissions.
Using a Carbon Calculator software, hotels will be able to compare their emission levels with that of their peers and set benchmarks to reduce carbon footprints based on the '12 Steps to Sustainability' guidebook.
Carbon Calculator is a tool that can measure the carbon footprint of Dubai's hospitality sector. It was developed by the Dubai Sustainable Tourism (DST), an initiative under Dubai Tourism.
The hotel emission analysis report has been launched in line with the UAE's 2021 National Agenda to promote sustainable growth, reinforcing Dubai's position as the smartest city in the world and a role model in energy efficiency.
Yousuf Lootah, executive director for tourism development and investments at Dubai Tourism, said the report would provide hotels with a guidebook to understand where they stand in comparison to their peers on the sustainability index every year. They will also be able to identify where "improvements can be made to facilitate further resource management, thus reducing the industry's collective carbon footprint".
"As the emirate continues to focus on strengthening the sustainability of the tourism sector, it is important that the industry remains diligent in the implementation of such measures to preserve the environment for future generations," he added.
Since 2016, the DST has implemented several greenhouse gas reduction programmes, as well as initiatives to support the sector's energy efficiency performance. These include the interactive, Web-based '12 Steps Towards Sustainability' guidelines, a manual providing practical and cost-effective tools to help hospitality establishments implement the best practices.
