A British man has been charged at Dubai court for alleged possession of cocaine. According to the Public Prosecution's records, the 46-year-old was caught on January 11 this year at his place in Arabian Ranches with more than 34 grams of cocaine.
He denied the charge at the Court of First Instance. A case was registered at Al Barsha police station.
A police lieutenant from the anti-narcotics division of the Dubai Police said, they were tipped-off regarding a female drug user. They also received information that she was dealing drugs.
"We obtained a public prosecution warrant, and searched her hotel room and found money that she earned from selling drugs. The money was in both UAE dirhams and US dollars. She confessed to smuggling crystal meth capsules in her gut as instructed by an African man in Thailand."
The lieutenant told the prosecutor that they learned later that she had delivered the drugs to the defendant. "She identified the man, and we searched his flat and found a substance of white powder in an envelope. The accused admitted he got the drugs from a man in Thailand after contacting him on WhatsApp."
The man claimed to the police that the drugs, found with him, were for his personal use only. According to the public prosecution investigator, Dubai police crime lab report showed that the defendant's urine sample tested negative for any drugs, which contradicts his claim.
The accused, who has been placed in detention since then, will be sentenced on April 15.
