A British national who was admitted to Rashid Hospital in Dubai following an attack in Sports City has been left with a broken leg, hand and nose.
On July 11, while out watching the World Cup match between England and Croatia at the Dome in Dubai Sports City, 42-year-old A.B said he was beaten up by a group of British men after he tried to intervene in an altercation they were having with a couple. The attack happened just after midnight, in the early hours of July 12.
Speaking to Khaleej Times from Rashid Hospital, A.B., who has been in Dubai for three years, explained how the attack unfolded. "The England game had finished. I saw these guys being aggressive and pushing this young couple who looked petrified, so I went to help out and their aggression turned on me."
Describing how he was set upon by four or five men, he said it was no contest really.
"They broke my leg in three places, as well as my hand, thumb and nose."
On Thursday, A.B. underwent surgery on his nose and leg, where doctors had to insert metal plates and screws into his leg due to the extent of the break.
"It was a case of wrong place, wrong time. I was only trying to help out but it was a bad move," he said.
Last Wednesday, some representatives from the British Embassy visited A.B. in hospital. In a statement to Khaleej Times on Sunday, an Embassy representative confirmed that it is in contact with the expat. "We are providing assistance to a British national who has been hospitalised in Dubai."
An official at Al Barsha Police Station also confirmed to Khaleej Times that it is following up on the incident involving a British national who was hospitalised after an alleged assault in the Sports City area on July 11. "A complaint has been filed and the police are currently investigating the matter."
Though he is being well cared for in hospital and is in regular contact with the police through the help of a close friend, A.B. said being laid up in hospital, "barely able to move", has left him concerned about an impending long recovery. "I've been here for 11 days now, and I have no idea when I will be able to fully go back to work. I've only been in my current job for a few months, so it's a constant worry as you can imagine."
