Let's turn the 2017 leaf and see what's in store as we usher in 2018

2017 has been an eventful year for the UAE in terms of tech advancements. Be it testing the flying taxis to getting robocops for surveillance and rapid progress on the UAE's Mars Project - Hope, the emirates has undoubtedly been at the forefront. We cannot crystal gaze into the future to see what's in store. But as we come close to wrapping up 2017, we can make a list of things to look forward to in the next year.
1. VAT comes into force
If there is one talk that is dominating social conversations lately, it has to be the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) in the UAE. While the middle-class is jittery about the additional cost that will dent their budgets, few are making plans to better their savings next year. From cooking at home over ordering takeaways and shopping for need rather than greed, their list of reforms is endless. VAT in UAE: How it will impact your pocket? 2. Flying taxis to become a reality
While the trial of the two-passenger autonomous air taxi (AAT) or flying taxi in Dubai began in 2017, more taxis will soar into the Dubai skies in 2018.
Over the next five years, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will collaborate with the General Civil Aviation Authority and Dubai Civil Aviation Authority to ensure that the operational requirements for implementing AAT services are put in place. Don't be surprised if you see one hovering around your window on a clear-sky day!
3. Hail an electric taxi
Moving forward with its quest for clean energy, 50 Tesla electric vehicles were rolled out as part of Dubai Taxi service in September 2017. Moving ahead, additional 75 vehicles will be added to the Dubai Taxi's limousine fleet. Be ready to be treated with royalty, as you can cruise around in the luxurious Model S and SUV Model X. If you are considering buying a Tesla, now could be the best time as charging the car will be free of cost until 2019. Additionally, Tesla motorists will get an exemption on salik and also avail free parking.
4. Drone deliveries to take over the skies
Not too distant in 2018, drone deliveries will soon become a reality in Dubai. This new-age delivery mechanism would cost nearly 30-40 per cent less than the traditional delivery. We had reported that in the initial phase, the deliveries will be introduced in specific areas like Emirates Hills, The Meadows, The Springs, The Greens, Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. It will then be expanded to a wide range of customers to ship goods and products weighing 5kg or less to locations across Dubai.
5. More attractions on the way
Dubai Safari - The much-anticipated Dubai Safari, home to 2,500 animals, will open its doors in the new year. An all-access package will cost Dh30 for children and Dh85 for adults while entry to the villages, excluding Safari Village, is priced at Dh20 for children and Dh50 for adults. Free access will be granted to children under three, elderly above 60 and people of determination. Ain Dubai - Adding another feature to their construction wonder, Dubai will unveil the largest Ferris wheel in the world, Ain Dubai. At a height of 210 meters, Ain Dubai will provide a 360-degree view of the city and its coastline. Don't be amazed if more eye-catching attractions are announced in 2018.
6. Projects to ease congestion in UAE
If there is one thing that is constantly being upgraded in the UAE, it is the infrastructure. To cater to the ever-growing needs, multiple projects are underway and will see the light of the day in 2018. The upgrade of Dubai-Sharjah access on the Emirates Road is expected to be ready by August 2018. It will provide a major relief to the many commuters, who take the route every day to work and back.
