A mobile platform will move around government and private entities to help Dubai Expo 2020 volunteer hopefuls register themselves for the mega event.
On Sunday, a three-day mobile Expo 2020 Volunteer Platform was inaugurated at Dubai Municipality headquarters in Deira to allow over 500 customers and public, private sector employees to register as volunteers.
People over 18 with strong personality, commitment, respect and awareness of UAE culture and values qualify to apply for the Expo 2020 volunteering programme. Saeed Al Shaqsi, senior manager at Expo 2020, said the mobile kiosk will move around entities across the UAE to allow employees become part of the programme that has already attracted 8,000 UAE nationals and expats so far.
The volunteering roles will not only be confined to the Expo site, but people are also needed off-site in airports, shopping malls and ticket sales centres across the country.
Dubai Expo 2020 launched the House of Volunteers on site earlier this month to recruit over 30,000 volunteers to help with over 30 roles at the mega event.
"Noticing that employees cannot visit our headquarters to register during their working hours, we decided to offer them a platform that will allow them to register and answer their inquiries on the programme," said Al Shaqsi.
The platform will register employees and conduct 15-minute interviews with the applicants to review their skills with available roles across three days. Applicants can also have their interviews at the House of Volunteers in Expo 2020 site.
Mohammad Mubarak Al Mutaiwei, the assistant director-general of Dubai Municipality (DM) for Communications and Community Sector, said: "We hope to reach over 1,000 applicants," adding that municipality employees will be given a paid leave, if needed, to complete their volunteering during the mega event. He said that workshops will be provided across three days to answer inquiries about the programmes and the roles needed.

Flexible volunteering

Al Shaqsi said that Expo 2020 is in talks with the government to allow applicants to volunteer during their working hours.
However, the programme allows employees to choose their preferred role and time through the system once the role has been assigned.
The Expo 2020 team will start assigning roles by mid next year. Generic training for all volunteers and customised training depending on each role will be provided at the end of next year in preparation for the mega event.
Those interested can register in https://www.expo2020dubai.com/volunteers and be ready to be called for a short interview.
