If you're one of those fitness buffs who feel a 5k or a 10k run is just a walk in the park, then obstacle races are the way to go.
Obstacle races help runners enjoy the outdoors - and get a severe workout while they are at it. Often, these races present military-inspired hurdles that challenge both the mind and the body.
With such courses, you'll get a combination of strength and cardio workouts. Races such as the Tough Mudder, Desert Warrior Challenge, and Dubai Spartan Race are great for anyone who would like to add a punch in their workouts. After a few successful editions in Abu Dhabi, Dubai will be hosting its first-ever Tough Mudder race on November 15.
Get out of your comfort zone
"Tough Mudder is a mud and obstacle course designed to drag you out of your comfort zone by testing your physical strength, stamina, and mental grit," said Nic Cartwright, managing director of Sabco Sport, the organiser of Tough Mudder.
The course, although challenging, is all about "having fun with exercise and working with a team".
"So it is the perfect event for the final weekend of the 30x30 challenge, which is based on these beliefs, too," Cartwright said.
Emma White, a trainer and founder of bactive.me, is one of those 'obstacle race enthusiasts', so this event is something she wouldn't miss. She is planning to partcipate with 32 other race lovers. "Tough Mudder is perfect for people who are willing to get wet and muddy," White told Khaleej Times.
Gritty obstacles
The upcoming race is divided into four categories - Tough Mudder 5k with 13-plus obstacles and challenges; Mini Mudder, a 1.6km obstacle course mud run designed for adventure-seeking kids; Tough Mudder Classic, a 10k race involving 25 obstacles; and Dubai Tough Mudder, a timed competitive 10-plus-kilometre race with over 25 obstacles.
Obstacles include artic enema, where runners need to dip themselves into 10,000 pounds of ice; Berlin walls with a 10-foot vertical climb; and an electroshock therapy, to name a few.
"We had people with serious fears of heights, water and mud. It was amazing to see these people overcome their fears. We had so much fun," White said.
