Three Asian residents have stood trial at the Ras Al Khaimah Criminal Court for siphoning off Dh8 million from a cooperative society in the emirate.
As per court records, the case unfolded last month when the Central Operations Room of the RAK Police was alerted about the embezzlement.
Police investigations showed that the trio had manipulated the monthly payrolls of the cooperative society staff to get the money. The third suspect told the police that they transferred all the money through a number of exchange companies step by step.
Two of the accused managed to escape out of the country whereas the third was arrested and was referred to the RAK Public Prosecution, which charged them with embezzlement.
The case was moved to the RAK Criminal Court, which found the three suspects guilty and sentenced the two at large to seven years in jail and ordered the third, who was present, to serve five years in prison. The three suspects were also ordered to be deported after serving the jail term in full. However, the third suspect, who challenged the ruling took the case to the Criminal Court of Appeal.
His defence lawyer requested the exoneration of his client based on the cooperative society's waiver he submitted to the Court, which ordered adjournment of the case to the end of this month.
Separately, the RAK Misdemeanour Court sentenced an Asian mobile technician and Arab woman to two months in jail and pay a fine of Dh1,000 each in compensation for breach of trust and defaming an Asian woman.
Court records showed that the case dates back to September this year when the two suspects posted some private photos of the plaintiff on social media without her consent.
The complaint alleges that the man stole her personal photos while fixing her cell phone, and passed them over to another woman, the second defendant.
The woman suspect posted the victim's private photos on two bogus accounts on Facebook and Twitter with the intent of disgracing her. The case was referred to the public prosecution and to the court, which found the technician and other woman guilty, and ordered them to serve two months in jail each. They were also ordered to pay the lawyer's fees.
