A salon owner, who allegedly fixed surveillance cameras in his shop that was frequented by women for Moroccan bath, has been charged in the Court of First Instance with breaching a woman's modesty.
The 25-year-old Afghan businessman was questioned by the police following a complaint by a customer.
"I wanted to take a Moroccan bath, so I took off my clothes and stayed in my underwear. But then an employee came and told me the place was equipped with surveillance cameras," the 23-year-old Syrian complainant, who was visiting the UAE, said in the investigation.
A police sergeant said the incident was reported from the salon in Al Muraqqabat around 10pm on December 5 last year.
"The complainant, who was still there, told us that she wanted to have a Moroccan bath but learnt there were cameras inside the place."
The officer checked and found there were cameras in the shop. "We asked the woman to review the footage to see whether she was filmed. She found that she was filmed without her clothes."
When the officers confronted the owner, he claimed he placed the cameras to keep an eye on the staff.
"We also came to know he could check the camera footages on his mobile phone."
The owner was then referred to the police station. He admitted in the investigation he placed surveillance cameras in his shop. The video recording was seized and used as evidence by the public prosecution.
The hearing has been adjourned to December 6.
