The RAK Police late on Friday announced that they have arrested an Asian robber implicating in robbing Dh800,000 with the help of the community in less than five minutes.
Major General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, said the Central Operations Room was alerted of the robbery at 11:40am on Friday.
"All the bodies concerned rushed to the scene in a record time and the robber, who used a plastic gun in his crime, was detained with the help of some society members in less than five minutes."
Brigadier Abdullah Mankhas, director of the criminal investigations department with RAK police, said the suspect was seen while running out of the exchange house with a bag in his hand. "Some passersby were running after him, and managed to catch him."
The CID team immediately reached the site of the crime and detained the robber red-handed with the bag full of cash.
"The plastic gun used in the crime was also seized." Brigadier Abdullah Mankhas added.
He said the exchange house staffers were closing down the outlet when the suspect, who was masked, pointed a gun, wrapped in a piece of cloth, at them, and grabbed a bag with around Dh800,000 in from them.
"When he fled the scene, the exchange staff activated an alarm connected to the RAK police central operations room, and ran after the suspect, eventually nabbing him with the help of some passersby.
"The policemen detained him after arriving at the scene of the crime."
Initial investigations show that the suspect arrived in the UAE 18 days ago on a labour visa issued from another emirate, he elaborated.
"Further investigations are on - and the suspect shall be referred to the RAK public prosecution for legal action." ahmedshaaban@khaleejtimes.com
