Hotels raise tariff after Ajman fire; tenants sleep in cars
Ajman - Tenants of towers 6 and 8 said that they tried to use fire extinguishers, but found they were empty, and the hose reels were not working either.
The fire first erupted in tower 8, and then spread to tower number 6. The towers are part pf the 12-tower Ajman One complex. Each tower has 26 residential storeys and three-level parking lots.
According to Col. Nasser Al Zeri, spokesperson of Ajman Civil Defense, there are five suffocation and five minor burns cases which were treated at Khalifa Hospital, and some cases were treated on the site by the ambulance and rescue unit.
The cases include a pregnant woman, two children, a special needs person and elderly man. Two firefighters also collapsed due to exhaustion.
The fire gutted five cars parked inside the building.
The rescue unit also rescued pets such as parrots, cats and puppies.
The Ajman Civil Defense, due to the size of the fire, had to request all other emirates for support in the firefighting and rescue operation.
Hotels exploit the situation and hike fare
Hotels had hiked the prices of rooms from Dh600 to Dh800 per night. As a result, those affected who were provided cash couldn't book rooms in these hotels.
The hike was mainly because of sudden spike in demand, and lack of sufficient hotel rooms.
Fakiha Mustafa, a resident of affected tower, said she had to spend the night in her car because hotels didn't have enough rooms and prices had gone up. "I'm trying to get a cheap room in Sharjah today."
Another tenant of tower 8 said that she couldn't find any vacant room in Ajman hotels and came to Sharjah hotels, which also hiked prices after the incident.
Another tenant, K.M., said that he was provided shelter for his family at Ewan Hotel and hoped he come back to his apartment to get his belongings.
Empty fire extinguishers
Tenants of towers 6 and 8 said that they tried to use fire extinguishers, but found they were empty, and the hose reels were not working either. They said only the alarm system was functioning, so the tenants managed to evacuate the building as quickly as possible.
Tenants of all towers allowed entering their flats
Tenants of neighbouring buildings which were evacuated were allowed to return after 3 pm on Tuesday once all services such as power, gas and water were restored.
